The first cup game of the season kicked off with high energy at Beef Meadow, where Beccles hosted Crusaders in a fast-paced clash. The opening try set the tone, coming off a scrum with a dazzling sniping move to settle early nerves.
Beccles' midfield shone early, paving the way for a stunning solo effort by No. 17, who carved through Crusaders’ defense to score a fantastic try. But Crusaders weren’t backing down – an immediate response saw their winger execute a superb catch-and-run into the corner to get their first points on the board.
Beccles fired back in style with relentless forward driving, creating the perfect platform for a slick passing sequence that saw debutant No. 2, Marley, power over for his first try. Not content with one, Marley struck again moments later – a dream start for the newcomer! By halftime, Beccles held a commanding 24-5 lead.
The second half started with Crusaders capitalizing on an early Beccles mistake. A quick penalty tap led to a hard-fought try and a successful conversion, giving the visitors a much-needed lift. Crusaders pressed harder, charging through the Beccles defense, but a heroic, try-saving tackle from Beccles’ No. 9 turned the tide. The ball was quickly worked out to Beccles’ electrifying No. 13, who sprinted from deep in his own 22 to score under the posts – a try capped off by an easy conversion.
Beccles refused to let up. A scrum deep in Crusaders’ territory allowed No. 8 to bulldoze forward, sucking in defenders before No. 9 darted through the gap to touch down in the corner. However, Crusaders weren’t done yet. A series of Beccles errors saw the visitors rally with two quick tries and conversions, narrowing the gap and keeping the tension high.
But Beccles’ No. 13 had other plans, scoring another sensational try after a dazzling run from his own try line to beneath Crusaders' posts. The No. 10 nailed the conversion with ease.
The final moments belonged to Marley, who capped off a remarkable debut with his third try of the day, securing his hat trick and the Player of the Match honors. The final whistle blew, with Beccles claiming an emphatic 53-29 victory.
Special mention goes to Baker, crowned Muddiest Player of the Match, for his gritty display in the trenches. What a start to the Cup for Beccles!
