Beccles II's Hammer North Walsham to Reach Final

Matt Goode22 Apr 2013 - 21:23

Beccles II’s continued their scintillating run of form to book a place in the Norfolk Plate final, with a hard fought victory over high flying North Walsham.

The Beccles team went into the game as severe underdogs. Having lost both previous meetings this year, the latter result being 86-0, Beccles knew they were in for a tough game. However, as the team captain Jon Pitts clearly stated before the game, Beccles are the holders of this trophy and it was not going to be given away lightly.

The opening quarter of the game was characterised by Walsham’s dominance in both territory and possession. Wave after wave of Walsham attacks were thwarted by some brave defending from the likes of John Payne, Alan Cooper and Duane Porter. Strong defending combined with Beccles disrupting the Walsham set piece meant there was no way through for the visitors.

Some strict refereeing at the breakdown allowed Walsham to convert three penalties in quick succession. From this point on however, it was all Beccles.

A powerful Beccles driven line-out gave the home side good territory for the first time in the game. From the back of a five metre scrum, Matt Goode looked certain to score under the posts but the ball was knocked on. Soon after, a sequence of tight forward play was rewarded when Jon Pitts crashed over to score an unconverted try, making the half time score 9-5.

The second half continued with Beccles having the forward momentum. Despite the loss of Liam Sutton to the sin bin for ill discipline at the breakdown, Beccles continued to outmuscle their much lighter opponents. In the Walsham twenty-two the ball was fed to Alan Cooper who side stepped his way through the defence to go over for a great try.

The only negative point of the day was the loss of Gavin Starks with a repeat of a dislocated shoulder. Starks was having a fine game at outside-centre and the team hopes he has a quick recovery.

Sutton returned to the field and quickly rectified his mistake. Strong forward running from Berry and Rouse gave Sutton the opportunity to pounce over for the try. Gavin Hewitt added the extras for a 17-9 lead.

Beccles were again reduced to fourteen men when the outstanding Duane Porter was penalised for handling in the ruck. However, Beccles were in no mood to let the momentum shift. B&B Skip Hire Man of the Match Keith Rix led from the front throughout, carrying the ball forward on numerous occasions, hammering rucks and destroying his opposite number in the scrum.

Spurred on by a massive home crowd, the play of the day came when John Payne fed danger man Sam Long hitting a fine line, Long in turn sprinted past several Walsham defenders to score a fifty metre try under the posts and seal a great victory for Beccles.

This was a huge result for the club and was typified when the first team made a tunnel of honour for the second team's achievement.

Beccles travel to Diss next Saturday in the final where they hope to retain the trophy for another year.
