Sudbury 13 – Beccles 3

Beccles lost their second game in a row after a hard fought game against Sudbury. The game looked to be heading for a tight finish before a fortunate Sudbury try took the game beyond Beccles.

There were a number of changes after the bruising encounter with Mersea Island the previous week. Hinsley was replaced by Maeer and Frost came in for Green. Schmidt moved to fly-half for the first time.

The first half was very tight. Sudbury had a lot of the ball but they couldn’t play through the tough Beccles defence. After a period of sustained pressure Sudbury took the lead with a penalty.

Beccles had their best period after this and put on some pressure of their own. They looked close to scoring a try but when the chance was wasted Beccles had a penalty and Wade added an easy three points to tie the scores.

The score remained the same well in to the second half with neither side creating many chances. Just when it looked like Sudbury would never break through the Beccles defence they came up with a try. Beccles put the pressure on a Sudbury scrum on the Beccles 22. The ball was not controlled by Sudbury and shot out the side. The Sudbury flanker picked up the ball and a couple of missed tackles meant that he scored under the posts.

Beccles were now playing catch up but some intelligent kicking from Sudbury meant they found it hard to get out of their own half. Beccles created a few chances to score but couldn’t convert them, a problem that has been holding them back all season. In the end it was Sudbury who added to their score with a penalty to make the final score 13 – 3.

This week Beccles host Canvey Island hoping to get back to winning ways after two decent performances have failed to get them any points.
