BECCLES 13 – CANVEY ISLAND 13

  Beccles were held to a draw on Saturday in their game against Canvey Island. Beccles never produced their best rugby in a scrappy game that finished with a score of 13 each.

  Beccles started the game poorly and some weak tackling allowed Canvey in for an early converted try. Beccles started to battle back in to the game after this. Beccles started to dominate territory and won a penalty for their efforts which Wade converted. Another penalty soon followed and Beccles were back within one point.

  The Beccles back line were looking penetrating and one move put Beccles in to the lead. Musker McIntyre man of the match Payne cut through the Canvey defence and scored under the posts. Wade added the conversion to give Beccles a 13 – 7 lead at half time.

  Beccles struggled to win ball in the second half so found it hard to attack the opposition and extend their lead. Canvey found it difficult to go through the Beccles defence. They did reduce the Beccles lead with a penalty after Johnstone was harshly sent to the sin bin for hands in the ruck.

  The penalty was the only points Beccles conceded while down to fourteen men. As the game got towards the end Canvey won another penalty which they scored to tie the scores. Beccles pushed for a score to win the game. With minutes left they surged towards the line to get in range but the referees whistle sounded for full time before the could add to their score.
