Beccles 27 – Basildon 7

Beccles stayed in fourth place in London Division 4 North East with a win over Basildon at Beef Meadow. In a hard fought game Beccles held their nerve and moved away in the second half to win by 27 – 7.

Beccles started the game well and were the first on the score sheet. Beccles were putting pressure on the opposition line and when the ball found its way in to the hands of Wilson he crashed over for a try.

Basildon then put together a good period of play which ended with them scoring a try and conversion to go in to the lead. Beccles soon came back and a Wade penalty put them back in front.

Beccles were struggling in the scrum and were only picking up scrappy ball which was carried forward by Musker McIntyre man of the match David Rix. When Beccles did put a good scrum in they added another score. The scrum provided a solid base for Sale to feed Payne who wriggled over for a score. This was converted by Wade to give a half time score of 15-7.

Thomas replaced Danny Rix at half time for his first outing of the season. Beccles have had an overseas player for the first time this season and Nick Schmidt from New Zealand was playing his last game after a successful stay at the club. He set up the next try when he broke down the wing and fed inside for Sale to cross the line. Wade added the conversion.

Beccles had time for one last try. It came from a Basildon line out. They threw long to the back but Wilson caught the ball and crashed over for his second try of the game. The conversion was missed and the final score was 27 – 7.

As well as losing Schmidt it was also Leigh Gedneys last game for the club before he goes in the army. This will leave Beccles short in the backs but there are some good young players coming through from the second team to fill the positions. Beccles have a week off from league fixtures this week when they play Fakenham in a friendly at Beef Meadow.
