Beccles 22 – South Woodham Ferriers 16

Beccles had a good start to the New Year with victory over league leaders South Woodham Ferriers. Beccles put in an excellent performance to dominate the game and win by 22-16.

Beccles had a strong side out with David Rix back from injury at No. 8. Beccles were on top in the set pieces from the start of the game, dominating in both the line-out and the scrum. Beccles went behind to an early penalty but they were soon back in front. Musker McIntyre man of the match Matt Arnold received the ball in his own 22. He cut through the opposition defensive line and managed to out pace the cover tacklers and go the whole length of the pitch to score in the corner. Murray added a long range conversion.

Beccles were on the score sheet soon after this. Some good pressure by the Beccles pack caused a hurried clearance. The ball went straight to Murray who hoisted an up and under. The ball was not dealt with by the opposition and Murray was able to hack on his own kick and win the race for the touchdown. South Woodham came back with another penalty to give a half time score of 12-6.

Beccles started the second half poorly and the opposition scored an unconverted try to get within one point of Beccles. Beccles began to dominate territory after this and were able to increase their score.

After a number of drives by the forwards Payne was able to cut through the defence to score. Beccles then scored again after a number of rolling mauls ended with Wade sneaking over in the corner.

The league leaders came back strong but the Beccles defence was superb. They held out until the final minute when the opposition crossed for a try in the corner. It was too late however as Beccles cleared the ball in to touch from the kick off and the final whistle went for a superb win for Beccles.

Beccles have a home friendly against Broadland this week before resuming league action away at Canvey Island the following week. They also have a social event coming up where they will be presenting LAST ORDERS at the Kings Head Hotel on Saturday 26th January (8:00 Start). Tickets are £10 and can be purchased from Reece Ling or Lee Roberts.
