Beccles 2nds 19 Thetford 2nds 32 The second fifteen were in action on Saturday and they had the whole Hewitt family playing in the pack. Lee ‘Taz’ Hewitt, who was a regular in the first team for a number of years, came out of retirement to play with his two sons. His two boys, Gavin and Jason, are now coming in to senior rugby with Gavin having already had first team experience. Lee has been retired for a number of years now but still looked the part an even scored a try on his return. In an entertaining game Beccles were narrowly beaten by top of the table Thetford. Thetford took the lead with an un-converted try on the quarter hour mark but a try from skipper Punt under the posts gave Beccles the lead with Dyer adding the two extra points from the boot. Thetford scored three more unconverted tries before half time to lead 20-7 at the break. Straight from kick off the Beccles pack forced Thetford back and Carl Townsend managed to ground the ball over the line, another Dyer conversion made it 20-14. The come back looked like it was on until some dubious refereeing saw Hunt in the sin bin after he was tackled very late off the ball. Beccles missed the powerful number 8 and Thetford ran in 2 more tries and the score was quickly 32-14. Once Beccles were restored to 15 players they dominated the last 15 minutes. Substitute Carpenter scored a try in the corner only to be judged to have had a foot in touch before the ball was down. The pack again put together some strong drives and when scrum-half Hull popped to man of the match Taz Hewitt. The veteran prop floored three Thetford defenders and barged under the posts for a try. A missed conversion left it at 32-19 with Beccles defeated by a good Thetford team.
