BECCLES
17-0 STOWMARKET
2006 was
a superb year for Beccles Rugby Club and it came to an end with a solid
win over Stowmarket. After promotion at the end of last season Beccles
are currently sitting mid-table in London Division 4 North-east. Their
17-0 victory on Saturday sets them up for further glory in 2007.
Beccles had nearly a full squad to select from for this important match
against a team who started the day level on points with Beccles. The start
of the match was very scrappy with the heavy muddy pitch making playing
good rugby difficult. Beccles adapted the better with their pack dominating
their opponents in the set-piece.
The pack came up with the first try of the game. The Beccles rolling maul
penalty move was set in to motion. After being brought down once Beccles
got it right and surged over the line. Thomas was at the back in his usual
position and was given another armchair ride over the line for his 11th
try of the season.
The second try was added before half time. The forwards crashed the ball
close to the line and when Rob Wilson squeezed a pass out the Robert Hall
he bounced off the covering tackle and scored in the corner. Hall was
made the White Horse man of the match. Beccles went in leading by 10 -0.
Beccles didn’t start the second half well and this gave their opponents
some hope. The pressure began to build on Beccles and when Thomas went
to the sin bin Stowmarket fancied their chances. Beccles were camped on
their line but their defence was as solid as ever. After a ten minute
spell on their own line Beccles were able to clear their lines and the
Stowmarket heads started to go down.
The final nail in the coffin came when Beccles added another try. Some
slick passing across the pitch gave the ball to Arnold who powered his
way over to touch down. Wade added the conversion and Beccles played out
the final few minutes to secure a victory by 17 – 0.
Beccles now have Christmas off and are back in league action on the 6th
of January away at Canvey Island.
