BECCLES
10 CANVEY ISLAND 0
Beccles
returned to winning ways in London Division 4 North East with victory
over Canvey Island at Beef Meadow. Beccles dominated a game that never
really flowed and scored two tries to win 10-0.
Rix was able to recall Lake, Hinsley, Thomas, Harris and Wade to the side
after injuries and unavailability. The match started in wet conditions
and the teams knew that the heavy pitch was going to make it hard going.
Beccles had most of the possession and territory in the first half with
the pack dominating at the lineout and scrum. Even with Hinsley in the
sin bin for a trip Beccles restricted Canvey to two penalty attempts that
were missed.
Beccles opened the scoring just before half time. The forwards drove the
ball up sucking in the defenders. The ball was shipped wide and good hands
by Hall put Holm in the clear to sprint in and touch down in the corner.
Wade missed the conversion from the touchline and the half time score
was 5-0.
Beccles put the squeeze on Canvey in the second half. They had them pinned
back in one corner and a number of drives for the line were only stopped
by some illegal tactics which led to one of the Canvey players going in
to the sin bin.
A couple of penalty attempts were missed in the swirling wind before Beccles
finally sealed the win with another try. Canvey were pushing their way
out of their 22 with Beccles down to 14 men again with Thomas in the sin
bin. Beccles turned the ball over in midfield and moved the ball wide.
It was recycled a couple of times before White Horse man of the match
Wilson received the ball on the touch line and crashed over for a try.
Canvey stepped up their efforts to get on the score sheet but the Beccles
defence was solid and they were never threatened before the final whistle
went for a 10 -0 victory.
Beccles travel to Sudbury on Saturday for another important league match
and will be hoping for another victory to move up the league.
