CANVEY
ISLAND 22– BECCLES 0
Beccles
had a poor start to the year with defeat at Canvey Island. After a number
of call offs due to illness Beccles travelled with a weakened side and
lost the game by 22-0.
The game was played in wet conditions making ball handling difficult.
Canvey adapted to the conditions quickest and had Beccles pinned on their
line in the opening minutes. Some superb defending, particularly some
good tackling by Payne, stopped a number of Canvey chances. In the end
the pressure told with the winger going over in the corner.
Canvey scored another try in the first half when missed tackles allowed
the other winger an easy run in. This gave a half time score of 10 –
0. It was not all bad for Beccles with White Horse man of the match Gedney
improving with every game in his new role at full back.
It was much the same in the second with Canvey dominating the game. Beccles
conceded two tries to rolling mauls. The second of which came when Beccles
were down to thirteen players after Maeer and Danny Rix were sent to the
sin bin.
Beccles never gave up and managed to create a few chances of their own.
Some strong rucking in midfield by Johnstone won the ball, which went
wide to Wade. He chipped over the top but was just beaten to the ball
by his opposite number to prevent him scoring. The final score was 22-0.
This week Beccles host Chelmsford and will be hoping for an improved performance
and a return to winning ways. Kick off is at 2:15 and all supporters would
be welcomed.
